Disability Discrimination Act (DDA):1995

This Act introduced measures aimed at ending discrimination against those with special needs. The act is split into 3 sections;

• Part I Deals with the definition of disability
• Part II Covers duties to avoid discrimination in employment
• Part III Is concerned with the access to goods and services and is divided into three separate areas:
  

• Dec 1996 - Treating a disabled person less favourably because they are disabled is unlawful
• Oct 1999 - Service providers have had to consider making reasonable adjustments to the way they deliver their services so that those with a disability can use them
• Oct 2004 - Service providers have to consider making permanent physical adjustments to their premises

It gives disabled people rights in the areas of:

• Employment
• Education
• Access to goods, facilities and services
• Buying or renting land or property

 
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA):2005

New obligations introduced in the 2005 revision of the act include:

• Ensuring that discrimination law covers all the activities of the public sector
• Requiring public bodies to promote equality of opportunity for disabled people
• Making it easier for disabled people to rent property and for tenants to make disability-related adaptations
• Making sure that private clubs with 25 or more members cannot keep disabled people out, just because they have a disability
• Extending protection to cover people who have HIV, cancer and multiple sclerosis from the moment they are diagnosed

Some of these obligations became effective in 2005 yet all were effective by December 2006.
